Custom additive manufacturing for appearance prototypes, functional testing and small-batch parts. HC-MOLD reviews your CAD, application, quantity, surface and critical dimensions before recommending SLA, SLS, HP MJF, FDM or selected SLM aluminum printing.
From one custom prototype to low-volume production, the goal is simple: choose a process and material that match the part's real function—not only its shape.
Surface appearance, mechanical load, feature size, part dimensions and order quantity all influence process selection. The comparison below provides a practical starting point; final feasibility is confirmed after CAD review.
| Process | Common Materials | Best Fit | Selection Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLA | Standard, clear, tough and heat-resistant resin | Appearance models and fine details | Smooth surface |
| SLS | Nylon PA12, PA11, selected TPU | Complex functional parts | No dedicated support structures |
| HP MJF | PA12, PA11, PA12 GB, selected TPU | Functional prototypes and small batches | Consistent packed builds |
| FDM | PLA, ABS, ASA, PETG, PC, Nylon, TPU | Large prototypes, jigs and fixtures | Engineering thermoplastics |
| SLM | AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy | Complex lightweight metal parts | Metal geometry |
SLA cures liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer and is often selected for smooth surfaces, small features and presentation-ready geometry. Common options include Standard Photopolymer Resin, Clear Resin, Tough Resin, Durable Resin, High-Temperature Resin, Flexible Resin, Elastic Resin and Castable Resin. Actual grade, color, transparency and performance are confirmed according to the application. SLA is well suited to appearance prototypes, housings, display models, master patterns and fit checks where surface quality matters more than production-plastic behavior.
SLS fuses polymer powder and supports complex geometry with surrounding powder, so separate support structures are generally not required. Routine material choices focus on Nylon PA12 / Polyamide 12 and Nylon PA11 / Polyamide 11; selected TPU / Thermoplastic Polyurethane and filled nylon grades may also be evaluated. SLS is useful for snap fits, brackets, ducts, housings, clips and functional prototypes with internal channels or interlocking features. The natural surface is slightly textured and can be dyed, tumbled, coated or finished when the project requires it.
MJF is a powder-bed additive process used for durable functional prototypes and small-batch 3D printing. Common materials include HP Nylon PA12, HP Nylon PA11 and PA12 Glass Beads; selected TPU and polypropylene options depend on project availability. MJF can be a strong choice for enclosures, connectors, fixtures, robotic components and repeated low-volume parts that need balanced strength and dimensional consistency. Orientation, packing, wall design, cosmetic expectations and critical dimensions are reviewed before production.
FDM deposits thermoplastic filament and is practical for large prototypes, design verification, assembly fixtures and cost-sensitive functional testing. Routine choices may include PLA, ABS, ASA, PETG, PC / Polycarbonate, Nylon PA6, Nylon PA12 and TPU. Carbon-fiber-reinforced nylon and special engineering thermoplastics such as PEEK or PEI / ULTEM, as well as FDM PA11, are subject to project review for machine capacity, filament availability, geometry and performance requirements. Visible layer lines and support marks should be considered when cosmetic finish is important.
For selected metal projects, SLM AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy can support lightweight structures, integrated channels and geometry that may be difficult to machine conventionally. Support removal, heat treatment, CNC machining of critical interfaces and surface finishing may be needed after printing. Metal-printing feasibility, minimum features, internal powder removal and inspection planning are evaluated from the CAD model and drawing.
Nylon PA11 (Polyamide 11) generally provides greater ductility, impact resistance and elongation, making it useful for clips, snap-fit features and parts that need more flexibility.
Nylon PA12 (Polyamide 12) offers a balanced combination of strength, rigidity, dimensional stability and chemical resistance for housings, brackets, covers and engineering components. Final selection should also consider thickness, load, temperature, finish and budget.
Additive manufacturing can enable internal channels, lattice structures, part consolidation and shapes that are difficult to reach with conventional tools. This does not mean every geometry prints without risk. Wall thickness, enclosed powder or resin, hole orientation, support access, warpage, shrinkage and post-processing access should be evaluated before quotation.
Our rapid prototyping service supports concept models, functional prototypes, fit-check parts, jigs, fixtures, housings, covers, ducts and small-run components for robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, medical-device development, research and industrial equipment. Application information helps the engineering team recommend a more relevant process and reduces back-and-forth during quotation.
Depending on the process and material, options may include support removal, sanding, polishing, vapor smoothing, dyeing, painting, clear coating, tapping, threaded inserts, bonding and assembly. Please identify cosmetic surfaces, color references, mating parts and handling requirements before production. Samples or photos may be needed where appearance is subjective.
Our Design for Manufacturing review considers geometry, build orientation, wall thickness, supports, trapped material, feature access and post-processing risks. A 3D file defines the shape; a 2D drawing is preferred for critical dimensions, threads, tolerances, finish and inspection notes. Any recommended change is discussed before production.
3D printing tolerance depends on process, material, part size, orientation and geometry. Critical dimensions and inspection methods should be agreed before quotation. Dimensional checks, photos and project-specific inspection records can be arranged according to the drawing and order requirements. Fixed tolerance claims are avoided until the CAD and measurement access have been reviewed.
Send files and requirements → CAD and DFM review → process, material and finish confirmation → quotation → printing and post-processing → agreed inspection → protective packaging and delivery. Lead time is confirmed from part size, quantity, process, finishing and inspection scope rather than presented as a one-size-fits-all promise.
SLS or MJF nylon often suits durable functional parts, while FDM may suit larger thermoplastic prototypes. SLA is usually selected when fine detail and smooth appearance are priorities. The correct choice depends on load, environment, geometry and quantity.
Clear SLA resin and flexible SLA, SLS, MJF or FDM materials can be evaluated. Transparency, flexibility, Shore hardness, color and surface expectations should be stated because results vary by material and finishing method.
Yes, SLS, MJF, FDM and selected SLA processes can support small runs when tooling is not justified. Quantity, consistency, finishing and total cost are reviewed against CNC machining, vacuum casting or injection molding when appropriate.
One custom piece can be reviewed. Feasibility and price depend on build setup, geometry, process, material and post-processing.
STEP, STP, STL, IGES, X_T, SLDPRT, OBJ or 3MF files can be reviewed. Please include a 2D drawing when threads, critical dimensions, tolerances or inspection points matter.
No. Special engineering materials, reinforced grades and FDM PA11 are subject to project review for machine size, supplier availability, geometry, performance and quantity.
For a faster quotation, send the 3D CAD file, 2D drawing for critical requirements, quantity, preferred material or functional need, finish, inspection scope and delivery destination.
